Hands-On: Geometry Wars Galaxies
(Nintendo DS & Wii)

Colourful, exciting and addictive perfectly sum up Geometry Wars Galaxies for Wii. Based on Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Galaxies expands greatly on the Evolved universe. Even at this early stage, it feels like the game developers really nailed the Wii Remote controls.

Geometry Wars Galaxies contains the spirit of such classics as Asteroids and R-Type. Your ship is placed in a grid (each planet has its own shape of grid) and can move anywhere within that space. Enemy ships, which look like simple shapes, rush toward your ship to destroy it. You’ll use the pointer of the Wii Remote to shoot and the +Control Stick on the Nunchuk to move your ship within the grid.

The different-shaped ships come at you fast and furious. Luckily, you have the help of a smaller ship – a drone – to eliminate as many enemies as possible. With the Wii Remote, you don’t need to point at specific enemies and shoot. You simply need to point at a direction and hold the B Button to shoot a steam of firepower. With this precise shooting control, you can quickly change your shooting direction without changing the movement path of your ship.

Geometry Wars Galaxies is a feast for the eyes.

Some of the grids have different gravitational forces. In one grid, a force swirled like a fan from the middle of the screen. If your ship went with the swirl, the ship moved faster. If it went against the force of the swirl, the ship moved slower through the swirl. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the wave one way or another.

The universe is indeed huge, featuring more than 60 levels. In addition, the original Retro Evolved is included in Geometry Wars Galaxies. The game supports the Classic Controller and will send a full copy of Retro Evolved to a Nintendo DS via DS Download Play. Although the game does not feature online play, it does have online leaderboards that will be updated on your Wii via WiiConnect24.

On top of all this, Geometry Wars Galaxies sports a nice co-operative play feature. Two players can blast geometric enemies on any of the game’s grids. In the DS version of Geometry Wars Galaxies, two players will battle wirelessly in versus mode. Success for one player means more enemies will be sent to the other player’s DS.
